TRUNK

ceramic, approx. 190 × 145 × 83 cm, 2024

"Trunk is a sculptural work based on 3D scans of the oldest tree in Switzerland. It is a scale replica of a 300-million-year-old 1.8-ton fossil tree, which is kept at the Valais Nature Museum. This ceramic trunk, produced in collaboration with artists Aline Morvan and Claire Mayet, translates the research involved in the Naturalis Historia series into a new medium. As in the process of fossilization, which takes place over the course of geological eras, a material change also takes place in the production of ceramics, from a soft to a solid state—though this metamorphosis is considerably accelerated, of course. This replica of a tremendous fossil tree forces us humans to reflect on how small we are and how fleeting our existence is."
